During this ongoing edition of the African cup of nations tournament, the Uganda cranes team really soared high just as high as the real Uganda national emblem bird the Grey-crowned crane as it successfully managed to defy the odds by emerging from the group stages which seemed like a momentous uphill task as it was had been placed with African footballing giants like Egypt and DR Congo and Zimbabwe which made soccer pundits to label the cranes team as anything else but a team that would emerge out of its rather deadly group.
The last straw tie
Many of these people had to take back their words as the cranes made it out of the group as it emerged as second best in the group only beaten to the top spot by the mighty Pharaohs team. On reaching the round of 16 stage, the Uganda cranes team was drawn against another African giant who is, in fact, the current defending African football champions, Senegal. The Uganda cranes team gave this match everything they had but it seemed just not enough to take us through to the next stage. Although Uganda got eliminated it posed quite a challenge that had everyone watching wishing the result had been in the cranes’ favor.
The cranes’ performance was so astonishing in that it led to the immediate acquisition of the services of the cranes’ coach Sebastien Desabre by one of Egypt’s finest football club called Pyramids FC which offered the Ugandan coach a hefty 90,000USD salary per month. It is also rumored that many of the Ugandan players also got their names into the notebooks of many of the European soccer clubs scouts who usually grace this tournament only to identify talented players for their respective clubs.
Even though they got eliminated, the Uganda cranes team players together with the technical staffs left the tournament with their heads held high and with a sincere gratitude from their home fans as well as other football enthusiasts elsewhere on the continent given their unique and captivating style of play they exhibited during this tournament that left many dumb-founded by how talented these players were. This was further stamped with their invitation to the Uganda statehouse for a dinner with the president of the dear motherland who congratulated them for representing the country well in the tournament. The president awarded the national team players with a million dollars reward for the fighting spirit and resilience they showed during all the games they played in Egypt.
